For a team that won five games in 2017, there is a lot of optimism in Tampa Bay. A revamped defensive line is expected to correct their lack of quarterback pressure, while speed acquired through the draft is supposed to cover up all their other ills. There seem to be awfully high expectations of their quarterback, too. Jameis Winston improved statistically last year, but he still guided the worst red zone offense in the league. A quarterback with two excellent catching tight ends and Mike Evans has to do better in the red zone.
Now comes word from the league that Winston won’t be allowed to participate in the first three games Ryan Fitzpatrick beat the Jets and Dolphins (with a backup quarterback) the last time he had to cover three games. This year he gets to face the Saints, Eagles, and Steelers.
This is how we see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2018 season unfolding, game-by-game:
Week 1: Buccaneers (0-0) at Saints (0-0)
The defending NFC South champions hope to get off to a quick start in 2018. They’ll need better offensive line play than they got last year, but Drew Brees and his rushers adapted pretty well to a bad line last season.
Ryan Fitzpatrick faces one of the surprise defensive units of 2017 in the Saints. Not many teams were able to pass on them, especially teams using backup quarterbacks. (Saints 28-6)
Week 2: Eagles (1-0) at Buccaneers (0-1)
When you face a team that clicks with either of two very different quarterbacks, you need more than a defensive line to deal with them. Tampa’s young secondary is exposed.
Ryan Fitzpatrick can’t deal with the Eagle rush and he still doesn’t have the running game to slow them down. (Eagles 27-10)
Week 3: Steelers (1-1) at Buccaneers (0-2)
As if playing the Steelers isn’t bad enough, the schedule makers put the contest in the Monday Night slot. Pittsburgh has the third-best record in Monday Night Football history.
Tampa sends rookie running back Ronald Jones II running around the left side and then the right side trying to tire out the Steelers’ defense. Instead, he just makes them mad. (Steelers 19-12)
Week 4: Buccaneers (0-3) at Bears (1-2)
Tampa faces their first non-playoff opponent of the season. Unfortunately, Chicago might have a better defense than the Steelers or Saints. They conspire to greet Jameis Winston very rudely in his first game back.
The Buccaneers defense isn’t very nice to Mitch Trubisky, either. But as the time of possession piles up in Chicago’s favor, Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen find they are a step faster than the defenders. (Bears 21-6)
Week 5: The Buccaneers are on their bye week.
Week 6: Buccaneers (0-4) at Falcons (2-3)
Atlanta didn’t do very well in an early season test against the Eagles, Saints, and Panthers. After an 0-3 start, they have a chance to even their record and get back in the playoff race.
Tampa’s defense gets after Mike Ryan, but the Falcons are on a mission and won’t be denied. (Falcons 20-14)
Week 7: Browns (3-3) at Buccaneers (0-5)
Buccaneer fans sense there is something wrong with this scenario. Cleveland, last year’s automatic W, is 3-3. While their rebuilt defense and improved quarterback have yet to win a game.
Cleveland makes the Buccaneers work for it, but Tampa finally gets into the win column. (Buccaneers 18-14)
Week 8: Buccaneers (1-5) at Bengals (0-7)
Cincinnati fans are worried they will replace the Browns as the laughingstock of the league before Marvin Lewis ever leaves. They already have.
Tampa has a much easier time of things in Ohio as the defense asserts it will and Winston scores twice. (Buccaneers 17-0)
Week 9: Buccaneers (2-5) at Panthers (6-1)
Carolina is another team on a mission and they are not about to feel pity for Tampa Bay or any opponent.
Winston is harassed all game and can’t see open receivers with the line collapsing on him. The Buccaneer defense has another good game to keep the score close, but not really. (Panthers 17-7)
Week 10: Redskins (2-6) at Buccaneers (2-6)
Washington spent a lot of money on quarterback Alex Smith. Perhaps they couldn’t afford any other new players after that?
New defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, late of the Giants, has a visceral reaction when he sees Redskins uniforms across the line. He leads a Tampa sack parade. (Buccaneers 23-10)
Week 11: Buccaneers (3-6) at Giants (4-5)
New York got through a brutal first-half schedule with three upset wins. With the lighter half of their slate coming up, they are anxious to get back to .500. MetLife Stadium is becoming a scary place to play. (Giants 21-10)
Week 12: 49ers (4-6) at Buccaneers (3-7)
The 49ers come off their bye wondering why Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t winning them more games. They show up in Florida with extra energy. Tampa’s youthful secondary is exposed again.
Winston has one of his best games against the rebuilding 49ers defense. It is not enough to counter the 49er attack. (49ers 27-21)
Week 13: Panthers (9-2) at Buccaneers (3-8)
Things are getting testy in the Tampa Bay area. JPP holds a raucous team meeting where he reads an article about how Atlanta, Carolina, and New Orleans could all be playoff-bound.
Carolina is completely surprised by the swarming defensive effort by the NFC South also-rans. Winston is able to do just enough to give Tampa the upset. (Buccaneers 17-9)
Week 14: Saints (8-4) at Buccaneers (4-8)
New Orleans is ecstatic that the Buccaneers knocked the Panthers a game closer to them in the standings. No one expects a repeat performance this week.
But the Buccaneers like the attention their upset victory afforded them. Winston almost gives the game away, but in the end, the Buccaneers have back-to-back wins against the division leaders.
Week 15: Buccaneers (5-8) at Ravens (6-7)
Tampa Bay’s defense keeps up the performance in Baltimore. They can almost taste a .500 season if they keep it up.
But a Baltimore team desperate to steal a division title from the Steelers matches the defensive effort and ekes out the win in a bruising battle. (Ravens 12-10)
Week 16: Buccaneers (5-9) at Cowboys (6-8)
Dallas has been inconsistent all year but realizes they can still salvage a break-even record. Ezekiel Elliott makes the Tampa defense look human.
Winston takes some shots, but he can’t bring the Buccaneers home with a win. (Cowboys 17-13)
Week 17: Atlanta (10-5) at Buccaneers (5-10)
The three other teams in the division go into the final week with 10-5 records. The Saints and Panthers play each, while the Falcons come to Tampa Bay. JPP posts copies of the same article in every locker.
Matt Ryan draws first blood, but Jameis Winston shows why so many believe in him. He hits his receivers in stride for two big scores and Tampa makes the Falcon sweat out a wild-card tiebreaker.
What happens next?
Beating New Orleans, Carolina, and Atlanta isn’t enough to save the jobs of the general manager and coaches. Tampa has talent on the roster for the next coach. Whether Winston should be part of that coach’s plans will be debated throughout the offseason.
