The Legend of Jimmy G ramped up with five consecutive victories at the end of last season. Is he really that good? Probably not. He only had seven touchdowns and five interceptions. At the rate, if he throws 35 touchdowns like his fans expect, he’ll be picked off 25 times!
He has another flaw to his game, too. In 24 trips inside the red zone, he only has 11 touchdowns. That might not seem right because he is usually good for points. Twelve other trips resulted in field goals. He only lost the ball once. But eventually, he is going to need the four points he keeps leaving off the board.
This is how we see the San Francisco’s’s season unfolding, game-by-game:
Week 1: 49ers (0-0) at Vikings (0-0)
Apparently, the schedule makers thought it would be great to pit the two most talked-about quarterbacks of the offseason against each other on opening day. I mean, they wouldn’t put Garoppolo up against an angry, determined powerhouse in their intimidating home stadium for any other reason, would they?
Kirk Cousins has the easier time of things on Day 1. The Mighty Jimmy has struck out. (Vikings 28-14)
Week 2: Lions (1-0) at 49ers (0-1)
Matt Patricia and Matt Stafford have big plans for the Lions this season. With a true running threat and improved pass rush, Detroit is planning to take a playoff spot.
Of course, San Francisco has a true running threat and an improved defense, too. The defenses look like they need more help after this one. Garoppolo starts another streak. (49ers 31-27)
Week 3: 49ers (1-1) at Chiefs (1-1)
Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs have scored over 25 points in each of their first two games. Their dynamic running game is big part of the reason why.
Garoppolo dials up some runs of his own before getting bored and throwing deep to win the game. Games like this will keep the hype going. (49ers 24-20)
Week 4: 49ers (2-1) at Chargers (2-1)
The Chargers came back from a 0-4 start last season to miss the playoffs by a tiebreaker. They followed that up with a solid offseason that Philip Rivers predicts will bring him to his first Super Bowl.
The Niners can put up points, but their revamped defense isn’t scaring anybody yet. Especially a team with as many weapons as the Chargers. (Chargers 27-24)
Week 5: Cardinals (2-2) at San Francisco 49ers (2-2)
Jimmy Garoppolo and Josh Rosen are going to see each other twice a year for a very long time if their team’s plans come to fruition. What better way to start the relationship off than with a passing contest?
Rosen is up for the challenge, but Garoppolo has the superior receivers and comes out on top in an exciting game. (49ers 31-23)
Week 6: 49ers (3-2) at Packers (3-2)
Jimmy Garoppolo goes against Aaron Rodgers in Week 6. The Packers are coming off a loss to the Lions that has Rodgers in a cranky mood.
It also has the Packer defense a little out of sorts. They harass Garoppolo into several mistakes in the ugliest game of Garoppolo’s short career. (Packers 27-17)
Week 7: Rams (3-3) at 49ers (3-3)
Not many fans expected these two teams to be 3-3. They face off against each other with a chance to restart their seasons. Jared Goff and Todd Gurley come out emotional and determined.
Garoppolo throws from the start trying to keep up. But the Rams have a defense that can make stops more frequently than the 49ers. The Rams get moving. (Rams 33-21)
Week 8: 49ers (3-4) at Cardinals (2-5)
This is a rematch of the best game Garoppolo has had this season. The first time was fun. This is business. The 49ers can’t lose any more games if they are serious about challenging for the NFC West title.
Josh Rosen scores, but the 49ers use both the ground game and special teams to make it a romp in the desert. (49ers 27-14)
Week 9: Raiders (3-4) at 49ers (4-4)
This is a Thursday game against John Gruden and his Raiders. Gruden always has something up his sleeve for prime time affairs, so the 49ers need to be ready for anything.
They aren’t ready for the air assault from Derek Carr. The Niners stay close, but they fall below the break-even mark again. (Raiders 28-24)
Week 10: Giants (3-5) at 49ers (4-5)
New York comes out of their bye week knowing they could easily be 0-8 by now. They know they have an easier schedule the rest of the way and come out energized.
Saquon Barkley is a force, but it is Odell Beckham beating Richard Sherman that keeps the Giants ahead in this barnburner. (Giants 31-24)
Week 11: The 49ers are on their bye week.
Week 12: 49ers (4-6) at Buccaneers (3-7)
San Francisco realizes their post-bye schedule is lighter, too. They come out determined to run the table. At 10-6, they could be grab a wild-card.
Tampa Bay has never gotten over its 0-5 start. While they continue to complain about their bad early schedule, the 49ers race toward the end zone. (49ers 27 -21)
Week 13: 49ers (5-6) at Seahawks (3-8)
Seattle has lost five straight and can’t break the funk. They show a little fight on national television but are never really in the game.
Garoppolo doesn’t have his best day, but he doesn’t have to. San Francisco’s defense and running game get the Niners back to .500. (49ers 21-17)
Week 14: Broncos (4-8) at 49ers (6-6)
The wheels have come off in Denver Broncos, too. The Broncos have a five-game losing streak of their own and Case Keenum has discovered why none of Denver’s quarterbacks had success last season.
The San Francisco offense has a methodical game against the still-dangerous Broncos defense. It is a new look, with good results. (49ers 20-14)
Week 15: Seahawks (4-9) at 49ers (7-6)
Seattle comes off an emotional primetime upset of the Minnesota Vikings to take on the 49ers. Russell Wilson comes out firing in an attempt to keep momentum from that game alive.
San Francisco knows they can’t lose any games if they want to get to the playoffs. Garoppolo counters with a vintage 2017-type performance. It’s a great game, with the defensive coming up big in the end. (49ers 28-24)
Week 16: Bears (6-8) at 49ers (8-6)
San Francisco is one game behind the Rams with a head-to-head battle on the slate for next week. They don’t want to know about tiebreakers. They just want to be 10-6.
But Chicago is battling for a respectable 8-8 finish. They are just as determined to win. The 49ers might be guilty of looking past the Bears. It’s a heart-breaking loss. (Bears 28-17)
Week 17: 49ers (8-7) at Rams (10-5)
With nothing to play for, the Rams rest Jared Goff and Todd Gurley, among others. The 49ers are left to wonder what might have been.
Garoppolo is determined not to lose to a bunch of backups and fires the ball around the field. 9-7 is a big step for the 49ers, even in they are disappointed. (49ers 27-21)
What happens next?
San Francisco is a player or two away from being a force. Expect that force to arrive in 2019. (But Garoppolo will still lose some games.)
