Washington won seven games last season with Kirk Cousins and not much else. Injuries created a revolving door of running backs and receivers. Washington Redskins live stream NFL 2018 Online on CBS, NFL Network , Foxsports & ESPN .
Naturally, Redskins owner Dan Snyder couldn’t wait to get rid of Cousins. Then, worried that none of the plethora of free agent quarterbacks would sign up to play for him, Snyder traded for a playoff-experienced passer in Alex Smith and threw 71 million guaranteed dollars over the first three years of a five-year deal (This year, plus four more.)
Remember, Snyder kept franchise-tagging Cousins because he didn’t want to guarantee a lot of money to a quarterback. Whether Smith can do more than Cousins with basically the same supporting cast remains to be seen.
This is how we see the Redskins ’ 2018 season unfolding, game-by-game:
Week 1: Redskins (0-0) at Cardinals (0-0)
Arizona has a different quarterback this season, too. While the team says they signed Sam Bradford to be their starter, even the oft-injured veteran admits rookie Josh Rosen is ready to take over.
Washington will be as ready as they can be for either an immobile, aging veteran or an inexperienced rookie. That translates to a narrow margin of victory against the rebuilding Cardinals. (Redskins 20-17)
Week 2: Colts (1-0) at Redskins (1-0)
Indianapolis comes into Washington with Jacoby Brissett filling in for Andrew Luck. Both teams are 1-0 after the Colts beat Cincinnati in Week 1.
Alex Smith expects to be able to attack the Colts’ secondary. Unfortunately, he forgot to tell his receivers. Welcome to the Redskins, Mr. Smith. (Colts 21-17)
Week 3: Packers (1-1) at Redskins (1-1)
Aaron Rodgers believes the Packers can run away with the NFC North this season. That’s why last week’s loss to Kirk Cousins and the Vikings has him in such a bad mood.
Washington’s defense can do little to stop Rodgers from punishing the team that let Cousins go north. Alex Smith decides to look for running backs this week, but he can’t find them, either. (Packers 27-10)
Week 4: The Redskins are on their bye week.
Week 5: Redskins (1-2) at Saints (3-1)
For the second game in a row, the Redskins face an angry playoff team. This week, Drew Brees wants to take out his frustration over last week’s upset loss to the Giants on the next team up… the Redskins.
Alex Smith studied photos of his skill players to help find them on the field. But the Saints do a good job of covering them up during the game. (Saints 27-13)
Week 6: Panthers (4-0) at Redskins (1-3)
Carolina starts the season on fire. They have already dispatched two NFC East teams rather handily.
Washington’s defense tries blitzing Cam Newton, but he runs his record to 5-0 lifetime against Washington. The Redskins take a rare uniform penalty after Smith ties bicycle flags on his receivers. (Panthers 24-14)
Week 7: Cowboys (2-4) at Redskins (1-4)
Dallas is having a tough time of things against a brutal schedule. Three of their four losses have come against 2017 playoff teams.
Washington tries cranking up their rushing game against the Cowboys, but with little success. Washington will not be mistaken for a playoff team soon. (Cowboys 21-7)
Week 8: Redskins (1-5) at Giants (3-4)
New York is a difficult team to figure out. They have won two home games against playoff opponents and came within a last-minute score of upsetting the Eagles in their third.
Washington marches in to play the Giants in their fourth home game of the season. Alex Smith discovers the screen option and has his best game as a Redskin. But can he do enough to break the Giants home mastery? Thankfully, Washington will never be mistaken for a playoff team. (Redskins 21-10)
Week 9: Falcons (3-4) at Redskins (2-5)
Atlanta lost three difficult games to open the season but has since won three of four. Getting back to .500 is a step closer to the playoff race.
Washington showed life against New York, but the powerful offense of the Falcons is on a mission. The defense takes a step back in Week 9. (Falcons 28-17)
Week 10: Washington (2-6) at Buccaneers (2-6)
Tampa Bay opened the season with a brutal five-game schedule. The only non-playoff opponent was the Bears in Chicago. They have taken two of three since in an effort to prove they are better than a 2-6 team.
Alex Smith wants to open the offense up to help the running game. Tampa’s defense denies him. Washington is kind of like a 2-7 team. (Buccaneers 23-10)
Week 11: Texans (7-2) at Redskins (2-7)
Houston comes in on a seven-game winning streak and in sole possession of first place in the AFC South. Everything is clicking for the team from Texas.
Conversely, Washington can’t get anything going. Smith runs for a touchdown on an otherwise bleak day. (Raiders 37-17)
Week 12: Redskins (2-8) at Cowboys (4-6)
Dallas lost two straight games against playoff contenders before coming home to host the Redskins in the annual Thanksgiving Day game.
Washington talks about putting in a good show in primetime, but Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott come out on fire. Smith gets the Redskins on the board with a pair of touchdown passes, but that won’t be enough on this day. (Cowboys 28-14)
Week 13: Redskins (2-9) at Eagles (8-3)
Running away with a division title and facing a 2-9 Redskins team usually doesn’t warrant a team meeting. But the Eagles just dropped three of four, including last week’s home loss to the Giants.
Once again, the Redskins are punished by a superior team for the actions of their last opponent. To make matter worse, it is another primetime game. (Eagles 35-7)
Week 14: Giants (7-5) at Redskins (2-10)
New York suddenly finds itself in the wild-card hunt after four straight wins. The Redskins can deal a near-lethal blow while getting even for the way the Giants set them up for their rout against the Eagles.
Alex Smith has another good game, but it is Samaje Perrine who does most of the damage for Washington. The Redskin defense rises to the occasion, too in a completely satisfying win for the home team. (Redskins 24-16)
Week 15: Redskins (3-10) at Jaguars (9-4)
Like Jacksonville needed motivation to beat the Redskins, they’re loss last week leaves them tied with the Texans for the AFC South title.
Washington’s offense continues to look more cohesive, but Leonard Fournette humiliates the defense in another rout. (Jaguars 30-19)
Week 16: Redskins (3-11) at Titans (5-9)
Tennessee’s playoff hopes have long since vanished, but the Titans want to win their last home game for the fans. Marcus Mariota comes out firing against the reeling Redskin defense.
Smith counters with two more touchdown passes, but it’s not nearly enough in another defeat. (Titans 27-16)
Week 17: Eagles (12-3) at Redskins (3-12)
Philadelphia has clinched the division title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Carson Wentz doesn’t even make the trip to Washington as coach Doug Pederson rests most of his starters.
It’s a depressing, lackluster affair. But Smith makes sure the Redskins count it as a win. (Redskins 16-10)
What happens next?
Jay Gruden looks for work in Oakland after Dan Snyder decides to “go in a new direction” citing a losing culture in the Washington clubhouse. Kirk Cousins sends Snyder a pair of Super Bowl tickets with a note, “Watch for me!”
