Miami chalked off a lost 2017 to their injured quarterback situation. This season, coach Adam Gase says he can “finally run his offense.” We’re not sure if he thinks Tannehill is the quarterback he needs, or if the departed Jay Ajayi and Jarvis Landry couldn’t handle his plays. Watch Miami Dolphins Game live stream online on NFL Network, CBS, Fox & ESPN network.
What’s important though, is that when a coach says he can finally run things his way, his way better work. The Dolphins also lost a key cog or two on defense in the offseason. Is Tannehill on a gimpy knee good enough to cover those losses?
This is how we see the Miami Dolphins’ 2018 season unfolding, game-by-game:
Week 1: Titans (0-0) at Dolphins (0-0)
One of the other sound bites coming out of Miami is how they finally have an “easier” schedule out of the gate than in recent years. The funny thing is, we’re hearing the same thing out of Tennessee.
The Titans have their own quarterback concerns and defensive holes to fill. It is hard to imagine either team learning much based off this game. Miami disappoints their opening day crowd by letting the Titans control the second half. (Titans 24-22)
Week 2: Dolphins (0-1) at Jets (0-1)
Speaking about quarterback questions… here come the Jets. Will Teddy Bridgewater show enough to be the starter? Will the Jets play it safe with their known commodity, Josh McCown? Will Sam Darnold capture the coaching staff’s hearts in training camp and take over the team?
At least the Dolphins know there is nobody behind Tannehill. Today, he is enough to leave Jets fans shaking their heads after an ugly game. (Dolphins 17-12)
Week 3: Raiders (1-1) at Dolphins (1-1)
John Gruden returned to the NFL sidelines in style, leading the Raiders to an exciting upset of the Los Angeles Rams on opening day. Then they lost to the rebuilding Broncos.
Traveling cross-country for an early game isn’t easy. Ryan Tannehill shows off his long game in a rout of the visitors from California. (Dolphins 31-17)
Week 4: Dolphins (2-1) at Patriots (1-2)
When Miami spoke about their easy schedule out of the gait, we can bet they were speaking about the first three weeks. New England is where momentum goes to die. It doesn’t help that someone told Tom Brady that the Dolphins were sitting in first place- his first place- before the game.
Brady and the Patriots bounce back from two straight losses to overwhelm the Dolphins at home. (Patriots 34-3)
Week 5: Dolphins (2-2) at Bengals (0-4)
If you want to recover from a humiliating beat-down in the NFL, there might be no better team to do it against than the 2018 Cincinnati Bengals.
Even without Ndamukong Suh, Miami’s defensive line manhandles the Bengal offensive front. The offense does just enough to pull out Miami’s third win of the season. (Dolphins 20-16)
Week 6: Bears (2-2) at Dolphins (3-2)
Life is good in Miami. The Dolphins sit alongside the mighty Patriots atop the AFC East. The Bills and the Jets are struggling. Could Miami be this season’s Buffalo and grab a surprise post-season game?
Chicago comes in off their bye week to offer their opinion. The well-rested Bear’s defense is especially pessimistic. Tannehill spends a lot of time scrambling in an emphatic Bears’ win. (Bears 21-10)
Week 7: Lions (3-2) at Dolphins (3-3)
Detroit also comes in off their bye week to pursue their playoff aspirations in Miami. Matthew Stafford puts on a show in the sunny confines of Hard Rock Stadium.
Tannehill and company can’t keep up, even against Detroit’s average defense. (Lions 31-17)
Week 8: Dolphins (3-4) at Texans (5-2)
After their showing against the Bears and Lions, it seems like a good time to get out of town. But Houston, where the Texans are on a five-game winning streak, proves to be an unwise travel location.
Miami shows spirit in a surprisingly close game, but they can not deny Deshaun Watson’s sixth straight victory. (Texans 27-24)
Week 9: Jets (3-5) at Dolphins (3-5)
New York heads into Miami with renewed hopes of their own after winning three of their last four games. Josh McCown has won the starting quarterback job as the Jets shop Bridgewater around.
But the Dolphins aren’t ready to lose a third-straight home game. Miami rides the momentum of their good showing in Houston to a decisive victory over the rival Jets. (Dolphins 27-15)
Week 10: Dolphins (4-5) at Packers (6-2)
If momentum dies in New England, it gets trampled and tortured in Green Bay. Aaron Rogers is enjoying his best season in years, and there is nothing Miami can do about it.
One of the under-written stories of 2018 is how much the Packer defense has improved. The Dolphins are held without a touchdown in a rout at Lambeau Field. (Packers 33-9)
Week 11: Miami is on their bye week.
Week 12: Colts (4-6) at Dolphins (4-6)
Adam Gase spends a good bit of time during the bye week explaining how the Dolphins have three easy games and three difficult games left on the schedule. If Miami can steal one of the tough games, they can finish 8-8 and possibly sneak into a playoff spot.
Indianapolis comes in feeling pretty good after taking the Jaguars into the final minute and beating the Titans. They leave Miami feeling even better after winning what passes for a shootout for these two teams. (Colts 27-24)
Week 13: Bills (1-10) at Dolphins (4-7)
Gase says If the Dolphins can take two of the three tough games…
Buffalo rolls into town with a new offensive game plan that almost resulted in an upset of Jacksonville last week. Apparently, Adam Gase didn’t watch that game. Miami has no answer for the surprising Bills, who roll over the Dolphins in a devastating loss. (Bills 31-3)
Week 14: Patriots (9-3) at Dolphins (4-8)
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have the Patriots convinced they must run the table to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs. They will not be denied by Miami.
The Dolphins hold tough in the first half, but the officials insist they finish the game. Brady adds to their season of woe. (Patriots 23-9)
Week 15: Dolphins (4-9) at Vikings (9-4)
On the one hand, there is a bit of encouragement to be playing a team on a three-game losing streak. On the other hand, facing the Vikings at home when they are in a bad mood and absolutely need to win is a bit less inspiring.
Minnesota vents a lot of frustration against a listless Dolphin squad. (Vikings 30-0)
Week 16: Jaguars (10-4) at Dolphins (4-10)
Jacksonville finds themselves tied for first place in the AFC South with the surprising Texans. With only two games to go, any chance of the Jaguars looking past their lower-state competitors this week is slim.
Miami’s final home game is played in front of a decidedly pro-Jacksonville crowd. The way they played, it looks like the Jaguars played a decidedly pro-Jacksonville team. (Jaguars 31-3)
Week 17: Dolphins (4-11) at Bills (3-12)
Miami begrudgingly drags themselves into Buffalo to battle for last place in the AFC East. A Buffalo loss gives them a shot at the first draft pick in 2019. A Miami loss moves them ahead of Buffalo for the number three pick.
Arguably, you can say the Dolphins won by not playing with any spirit in Buffalo. (Bills 16-10)
AFC EAST More Preview
What happens next?
Armed with the number three pick, Miami ownership decides the Adam Gase and Ryan Tannehill era is over. The Dolphins clean house immediately after the last game. Dolphin fans find Teddy Bridgewater on their roster in 2019.
