Then they signed Teddy Bridgewater. GM Mike Maccagnan said if the former Viking stays healthy, there’s no reason to think he won’t start for the Jets.
Then they made some draft deals and came away with “NFL-ready” quarterback Sam Darnold with the number three pick. Offensive coordinator Jeremy Batessays Darnold could step right in as a rookie.
Welcome to New York Jets football.
This is how we see the New York Jets ’ 2018 season unfolding, game-by-game:
Week 1: Jets (0-0) at Lions (0-0)
Whoever the quarterback is on opening day has the unenviable task of trying to keep up with Matt Stafford in Ford Field. Our best guess is that Josh McCown is under center.
The Jets give Stafford a go of it, but the defense yields too many long passes to Matt Patricia’s troops to pull out the victory. (Lions 27-21)
Week 2: Dolphins (0-1) at Jets (0-1)
Miami travels to New York off a disappointing loss to the Tennessee Titans. This should be a winnable game for the Jets, but they come out flat.
The Dolphins don’t look much better, but they show enough to pull out a snoozer in the Meadowlands. (Dolphins 17-12)
Week 3: Jets (0-2) at Browns (0-2)
Cleveland enters this week with a chance to lose their 20th game in a row. Despite that, oddsmakers call them the favorite in this Thursday Night Football matchup.
If the Jets are angry about this, they don’t show it on the field. Cleveland swarms over the Jets offense in a game that isn’t as close as the final score. (Browns 20-13)
Week 4: Jets (0-3) at Jaguars (2-1)
After an upset loss to the Giants, Jacksonville rattled off two solid wins against the Patriots and Titans. They are not about to let the Jets get off the turf after their historic loss to the Browns.
McCown faces a top defense, but it is still hard to defend his play in the early season. Speculation of a change behind center creeps into newspapers. This game does nothing to quiet the whispers. (Jaguars 23-6)
Week 5: Broncos (3-1) at Jets (0-4)
Case Keenum has silenced those who wanted John Elway to go all in for Kirk Cousins. The Broncos come to New York after a Monday Night Football upset of the Kansas City Chiefs. Denver does not seem ready to ease the Jets’ early-season maladies.
But the Jets’ defense shows up to play. Keenum and McCown scratch and claw through the game. It is McCown who gets his team close enough for a late field goal that secures the Jets’ first victory of 2018. (Jets 19-17)
Week 6: Colts (2-3) at Jets (1-4)
Indianapolis limps into MetLife Stadium losers of three straight to Philadelphia, Houston, and New England. The Jets seem like a good team to play after that stretch.
Of course, the Jets are thinking the same thing about the Colts. New York and Isaiah Crowell beat down a weary Indianapolis squad. McCown looks to be back on track. (Jets 23-17)
Week 7: Vikings (5-1) at Jets (2-4)
If you must play the Vikings and a red-hot Kirk Cousins, what better time than after a couple of wins and in front of your home fans?
McCown puts a pair of touchdowns on the board, but there is no stopping the Vikings’ offense. The Jets take a step back against the NFC North leaders. (Vikings 27-16)
Week 8: Jets (2-5) at Bears (3-3)
After an early bye week, the Bears come off a win in Miami and a tough loss at home to the Patriots. Chicago needs to beat teams outside their division if they are to stay in the NFC North race. Facing the Jets at home seems like an opportunity.
But in a game between two under-rated defenses, it is the hotter quarterback who wins out. Josh McCown continues to win back fans with three touchdowns in the road upset. (Jets 21-16)
Week 9: Jets (3-5) at Dolphins (3-5)
Miami has lost three straight coming into this game, but they feel good about their energetic performance in a near-upset of the Texans in Houston last week.
Josh McCown and the Jets are starting to hit their stride, too. Who wins the battle toward mediocrity? Ryan Tannehill has a big game against the Jets’ defense to send the visitors home unhappy. (Dolphins 27-15)
Week 10: Bills (1-8) at Jets (3-6)
Neither of these teams is having the season their fans envisioned. The Bills’ defense is determined to win another game before their bye week. The Jets’ defense is just as determined to defend their home turf.
The result is one of the hardest-to-watch football games of the season. Neither offense gains 200 total yards. When the dust clears, the Jets’ emerge with an ugly victory. (Jets 13-10)
Week 11: The Jets are on their bye week.
Week 12: Patriots (7-3) at Jets (4-6)
Bill Belichick with extra time to scheme and plan is almost unbeatable. When Tom Brady tells the press he thinks the Patriots have to run the table to win home field advantage in the playoffs, you just know their opponent is in for a bad week.
Thus it is with the Jets as their guests treat them rudely on the way to another AFC East title. New England puts on an offensive show for the Meadowlands crowd. (Patriots 41-3)
Week 13: Jets (4-7) at Titans (3-8)
Tennessee has fallen on tough times, losing five games in a row, including a thrashing at the hands of Houston in last week’s Monday Night Football game. Surely, the Jets have a chance for a road victory there, right?
Even with a rookie quarterback?
Sam Darnold makes his NFL debut against Marcus Mariota and the Titans. Tennessee’s defense rises to the occasion and assures the rookie will not get his first win at their expense. The Jets’ defense has another bad game as Tennessee rights the ship. (Titans 26-17)
Week 14: Jets (4-8) at Bills (2-10)
Since their bye week, the Bills played the Jaguars tough and destroyed the Dolphins with their revamped running attack. The Jets arrive with a quarterback playing his second NFL game and a defense that is imploding.
Naturally, the Jets take charge. Sam Darnold throws his first NFL touchdown and the defense does the rest in front of a restless Buffalo crowd. (Jets 20-10)
Week 15: Texans (9-4) at Jets (5-8)
Houston is desperate for a win after two straight losses that allowed Jacksonville to catch them in the AFC South division race. Deshaun Watson picks the Jets’ defense apart.
Houston can’t put the Jets away though because Sam Darnold is holding his coming out party in front of the Jets fans. In a very entertaining game, each quarterback throws for three touchdowns and runs for another. An early field goal by Houston makes the difference in a tough loss for Darnold and the Jets. (Texans 31-28)
Week 16: Packers (10-4) at Jets (5-9)
It doesn’t get any better for the Jets in Week 16. Green Bay boasts the top-ranked quarterback in the league andneeds a win to fend off the Vikings in the race for the NFC North title.
Darnold and the offense have a decent showing, but the defense is overwhelmed again under the onslaught of a quality offense. (Packers 35-21)
Week 17: Jets (5-10) at Patriots (11-4)
New England is used to resting their starters for Week 17. This season, they find themselves in a three-way battle for home-field advantage in the playoffs. Brady starts but is pulled at halftime with the Patriots holding a 14-3 lead.
Brian Hoyer comes out for the second half and the Jets’ defense finally rises. Sam Darnold takes advantage of good field position and turnovers to move the Jets ahead midway through the fourth quarter. Brady can be seen pleading to go back in. Belichick ignores him.
New York holds on for their sixth win and hands the Patriots a home wild-card game in the process.

What happens next?
New York is left to wonder what might have been had they given the ball to Darnold on opening day. Todd Bowles will be brought back to see how that goes next season. Maccagnan will go defense-heavy in the draft leaving his young quarterback with limited resources because… the Jets.
